The Elementary Education Program provides support and services for the elementary students, parents, teachers, and administrators. The focus of the program is to provide every student the best start possible toward a successful, productive life.
Gilchrist County has two elementary school sites, Bell Elementary School and Trenton Elementary School. The two schools serve a total of approximately 1,434 students in kindergarten through fifth grades. The teacher to student ratio is 1:20 for the district's elementary schools, which are both fully accredited, and have earned high grades from the Department of Education.
The schools provide the following:
• Curriculum covering the Sunshine State Standards for all students;
• STAR Reader and STAR Math;
• Accelerated Reader Program;
• Family Literacy Nights for students and families to participate in Accelerated Reader in the evenings;
• Compass Learning Program, which is a diagnostic, individualized computer system to help students prepare for promotion skills, FCAT tests, and Stanford Achievement tests;
• Learning styles assessments to determine how students learn best;
• Diagnostic reading assessments in identify which reading skills students have or have not mastered;
• Educational screenings for students who are having academic difficulties;
• PASS (Providing Alternative Student Success) Program for students who have been retained more than once;
• Slosson screenings for potentially gifted students;
• Supplemental Reading Instruction;
• Stanford Achievement tests for students in grades K-2;
• FCAT and Stanford Achievement tests for students in grades 3-5;
• Exceptional Student Education;
• Title I and III Services;
• ESOL services for students with limited English proficiencies.
