Veterans Day

Veterans Day originated as "Armistice Day" on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I.  Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance and November 11th became a national holiday beginning in 1938.  Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans (living or dead) but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

Thank a Veteran on Veterans Day!

Here are some ways that you can thank a Veteran on Veterans Day (and every day!)

  • Fly an American flag outside your home.
  • Participate in a Veterans Day parade.
  • Personally thank a Veteran for their service!
  • Attend an official Veterans Day ceremony.
  • Send a care package to a military servicemember at home or overseas.
  • Volunteer with the American Legion or the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
  • Donate to organizations like the DAV, Operation Homefront, or the Wounded Warrior Project.
  • Call or write local media and community groups to show your support and encourage others in your area to do the same.
