4TH GRADE

TES 4th grade
Week 9 and Summer

May 18, 2020

Dear Parents,

Bizarre! Crazy! Strange! Scary! Uncertain! 2020 in a nutshell!

We want to say a big “thank you” for your support and for rising to the added challenge of working with your child at home during the last quarter. We appreciate every single effort! In order to help your child continue to move forward over the summer, we are providing a list of our favorite suggestions and resources for learning and FUN!

We truly loved our students this year and were so sad that our time with them was cut short due to COVID-19. Enjoy your summer and be ready to dive in during the fall! Even though some aspects may be different, we are confident that your child will continue to learn and succeed in every way!

Sincerely,

4th Grade Team

4TH GRADE SUMMER LEARNING RESOURCES

#1 – i-Ready will be available ALL summer long. (Students should continue to work on their independent path. The recommendation is no more than 45 minutes per week per subject. However, if your child is NOT working on 4th grade level, you may want to increase the time.)

#2- AR website is available. READ, READ, READ! You know the drill: 20 minutes a day! Self-selected, high-interest material! Find a series or an author that your child loves. Try to read of mixture of fiction and non-fiction. Visit public library (if open). Some students have access to getepic.com (online library) free till June 30th. TURN ON CAPTIONS while watching TV, then it becomes an opportunity to READ as well!

#3- MATH – Do old fashioned flash cards or online games to MASTER ALL BASIC FACTS! (+, -, X, and division) This is especially important if students use fingers or other “tricks”. Don’t forget about opportunities to learn math in real life: cooking, building, sewing, taking a trip, etc.

Websitesprodigy.com, extramath.org, funforthebrain.com, math-drills.com, multiplication.com, turtlediary.com

#4-WRITING – The last quarter is when we typically would have reviewed cursive handwriting. Look at tutorials to learn correct letter formation. Keyboarding practice is great, also. Keeping a journal, writing notes, letters, and cards, or making lists (grocery, packing, to-do) are all authentic ways to write. Even though we live in a digital world, their essay test is pencil/paper, so both kinds of practice are needed.

#5-SCIENCE – 5th grade is a BIG year for science! So, watch a few documentaries (National Geographic, PBS, etc). Mythbusters (TV Show) is loaded with the scientific method. How about some Bill Nye shows on Youtube! Read a non-fiction book about a science topic. Do some hands on activities: gardening, exploring, observing, nature walks. There is a conservatory in Gainesville at Santa Fe College, and several great science museums around the state, chock full of interactive learning! A few important topics are Earth’s rotation and revolution, The Rock Cycle, Animal Adaptations and Interdependence (Food Chains).

Websites: scienceforfun.org

#6-SOCIAL STUDIES-We were learning all about Florida in 4th grade. The summer would be a fantastic time to STAYCATION and discover our state up close! Possible Field Trips: State Capitol (Tallahassee), Mission San Luis (Tallahassee), NASA @ Cape Canaveral, Ringling Estate (Sarasota), Marjorie Kinan Rawlings House (Micanopy), Dudley Farm (Newberry), Civil War Museum in Cedar Key, Cracker House Museum (Perry), Museum of Natural History (Gainesville), Florida Aquarium (Tampa), Key West, Everglades National Park, and MANY MORE!

ONE LAST NOTELIMIT VIDEO GAME TIME AND TV! Add in chores, regular bed time, exercise, and creative activities! We are sending home all student textbooks and workbooks. They are good resources for extra practice!

Elementary Assignments: Week 1

ALL Elementary Grade Levels

Week #1: March 23-27, 2020

All students are expected to read at home for 20 minutes or more per day!If you have an AR book, please continue reading it. If you don’t have a book or other reading material, please read anything appropriate that is available to you.

All students are expected to spend a total of one hour during the course of the week on i-Ready for each subject this week:math and reading. You can break this up in three 20 minute sessions or two 30 minute sessions per subject.

If your child does not know how to log in to i-Ready, we are sending log in information home in the mail. This information will also be posted in the REACH section of the website under the elementary (PK-5) link. Please note, i-Ready cannot be accessed on a phone – only a computer or i-pad.

If you cannot access i-Ready after receiving the letter in the mail, please email helpdesk@mygcsd.org or call 352-463-3200.

This week’s assignments are condensed to help you ease into this new way of work. Next week, assignments will more closely resemble what your students were doing in class prior to the school closures.

*If your child is on Access Points, he/she will do the same assignments for this week. However, modified assignments will be provided in future weeks.
