This week’s work is a wrap-up to our unit on the world’s oldest civilizations. It is optional and will not be graded but I enjoy reading the student’s work and look forward to reading what they want to share.

The final activity
Our gifted theme for this year has been “The 10 Oldest Civilizations”. These civilizations were:
1 – Mesopotamia
2 – Indus Valley
3 – Ancient Egypt
4 – the Maya
5 – Ancient China
6 – Ancient Greece
7 – Persia
8 – Ancient Rome
9 – the Aztec
10 – the Inca

For each civilization, list one key fact that you learned this year about that civilization. If you have trouble remembering details about any of the civilizations you can research them again.

Which ancient civilization did you think was the most interesting? Pick one and give me your reasons why. Please write in complete sentences using your best spelling and grammar.

1st & 2nd grade – At least 2 reasons.
3rd grade – At least 3 reasons.
4th & 5th grade – At least 4 reasons.

Our gifted theme for this year has been “The 10 Oldest Civilizations”. The Aztecs were #9 so we still have one more group to learn about – The Inca. This week we will focus on the Inca. Then write some things that you learned about the Inca.

The Inca lived in the Andes Mountains. Research the Andes Mountains (you can do this online or with books) and find out some basic facts about the mountain range such as: What countries are the Andes mountain in? What continent are they on? What is the elevation/height of the mountains? How long is the mountain range? You can also add some other facts that you find interesting.

1st & 2nd grade – At least 2 facts.

4th & 5th grade – At least 4 facts.

One of the best known Inca cities is Machu Picchu. Read the article “Machu Picchu Facts” https://www.scienceforkidsclub.com/machu-picchu.html and write 1 sentence that tells about the Inca and Machu Picchu.

Find some pictures of Machu Picchu online (or you can use the photo from the article you read yesterday). Then create some art about Machu Picchu. You can either: a) Draw and color a picture of Machu Picchu or b) Make a Machu Picchu photo collage using WordArt or some other computer program using 3 – 5 photos you find online. When you are finished with your drawing/collage, add a caption that tells about the Inca and Machu Picchu. You can use the caption that you wrote yesterday.

The Aztecs were famous for their “chinampas”. Read the article “Aztec Farming” http://www.aztec-history.com/aztec-farming.html and write one sentence that explains what a chinampa is and how it was a different way to farm.

Explore online and find some pictures of chinampas. (You can do a Google image search for this.) Draw a picture of a chinampa and write a caption to go with it. You can use your sentence from yesterday’s reading as your caption or write a new one.

Explore Aztec pottery online.  Look at least 8-10 examples.Pick one that you like the best and share it with me. You can either draw a picture of your favorite pottery and take a picture of it or share the picture directly from the site. Then write a one sentence caption that explains why you like this piece of Aztec pottery better than the others that you saw.

Read “Mexican Pottery Paper Plate Craft”

Follow the directions and design your own ancient Aztec pottery plate. You can either draw your design on a paper plate or you can draw a circle on a sheet of paper and then draw your design. Remember to use colors the Aztecs would have used—usually reds, oranges, browns, and black. If you don’t have paint at home, just use markers or crayons to add color. Take a picture of your creation and share it with me.

Finish your rough draft from last week: Check your work for spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalization. Ask someone at home to read your paragraph and see if everything looks correct. Finished paragraphs should have:

1st—2nd grade: 4 sentences total (1 topic, 2 supporting detail, and 1 closing sentence)

Make your final copy: Rewrite/Retype your rough draft making any corrections needed. It is not required but you can add a drawing/illustration to your paragraph if you like. You can do the drawing freehand or you can experiment with whatever art program you have on your computer. Paint 3-D is on my computer here at work but there are lots of different art programs out there.

Prewriting: Just before Spring Break we wrapped up a unit on Ancient Rome. Try to remember some of the activities we did in class and list some of the most important things the ancient Romans did. If you need help remembering you can explore Ancient Rome online for a few minutes and get some ideas.

Topic sentence and supporting details: Write the rough draft for your paragraph by writing a topic sentence (in your own words) that says that Ancient Rome was important, that they did many important things there, and then tell what you think was the most important thing they did. Once you have written a topic sentence add your supporting details. Then write your closing sentence to end the paragraph.

1st—2nd grade: At least 2 sentences of supporting detail

3rd grade: At least 3 sentences of supporting detail

4th grade: At least 4 sentences of supporting detail
